" ..... After They've Seen Paree"?

We in "the civilized West" have seen a dramatic upswing in random assaults, especially sexual assaults on women, in European countries who have "accepted" a huge number of "immigrants" from countries with a culture which do not accept the culture of their new host country.

Just recently:
Cologne Sex-Attack Spree Sparks 'Huge Spike' in Weapons Sales - NBC News: MAINZ,
Germany — A spate of Hundreds of sex assaults allegedly committed mostly by North African men on New Year's Eve in Cologne has sparked an "explosion in sales" of pepper spray and non-lethal guns, German officials and an industry chief said.
Breitbart reports on "Europe's Rape Epidemic" in October of 2015, including Germany and England.

In 2015, FORBES asks:
Why Did British Police Ignore Pakistani Gangs Abusing 1,400 Rotherham Children? Political Correctness

In November 2015, Infowars reports:
A group of North African migrants living in a tent city in Stockholm have been found guilty of brutally gang-raping a 23-year-old woman in yet another example of how Europe’s open border madness is exacerbating the sexual abuse of women.
And on January 14, 2016,  in Liverpool, a Muslim immigrant from Eritrea was sentenced to ten years in prison for dragging a young woman into the woods and raping her twice.

APPARENTLY, these "young muslim men" see nothing particularly atrocious in the rape of young white women.  These young muslim men have grown up in a culture which does not value the sanctity of women, and so they feel free to assault and rape women of their host country ... the country which granted them santuary from the 'violence' of their home country.

German and English leaders have stated that there are so many immigrants applying for asylum that it is impossible to winnow out the legitimate sanctuary-seekers from those who seek only the social support (including monthly cash allowances) and relaxed police oversight on new citizens.

One would hope  that if it was impossible to determine who is a refugee and who is a potential rapist, the government would take steps to monitor their activities ... but that's an impossible burden on a police community which is already stressed by domestic crime.

Maybe it would be possible for these government to at least disallow migration of young males, whilc allowing married males and their female family members to enter the country and live a live of ease on the government dole ?  (Just a passing thought .. pay no attention.)

However, leaders of Sweden, England, Austria and Germany have already made it clear that they are trying to save as many innocents as possible, and so they are willing to accept that their background checks are not perfect.    The best thing is for their women is to never go outside. Problem solved!

I'm not sure that the innocent women and girls who are routinely raped by immigrants on the government dole are satisfied by the blatant abdication of their duties by their national leaders.\
Or their metro-men.

But, that could NEVER happen in America!  Because ... oh, well, this IS America!

PS:   THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT

H?T:

White "Men" more dangerous than ISIS?

Dallas Mayor: I’m More Fearful Of Armed White Men Than Syrian Refugees:

So it would seem that Rawlings is thinking of a smarter way to combat terrorism that doesn’t involve demonizing Syrian refugees or other refugees. I hope that trend catches on throughout the rest of the South. But in the meantime Rawlings’ courage to stand against Islamophobia should make his city (and all Texans) very proud. It’s just too bad the same can’t be said about the highest elected Texas official. Maybe that will change one day.

I'm trying to think of "white men" terrorists.
  • Navy Yard Shootings *(not white?)
  • Texas Army Base (Arabic?)
  • Columbine (Disaffected teen-agers, but still "white" and "male", if not "men")
  • 911 (weren't these  guys "white", as in "Caucasian"?  Islamic, though; does that count?)
  • Ruby Ridge (Hostage Rescue Guy Lon Horiuchi... "White"?  Was he a "Terrorist"?)
  • Boston Marathon (well, aren't Arabian males "white men"?)
  • Boston Bomber (oh .. it wasn't him)
  • The College Student in California who couldn't get laid?
I'm not sure, but I suspect that most mass murderers in this country (and others) find more incentive from their politics, their religion, their disaffection or their culture than from the color of their skins.

The point, which Rawlings seems to be willing to overlook, is that he is the racist.  He's not thinking of Syrians as "Islamists"; he's equating them with "people of color".  Why else would he be railing about "white men"?

“ISIS is no more Islamic than Nazi senior staff was Christian,” he said. He also subtly challenged Christian governors and other followers of Christ who have rejected refugees, referencing Jesus’ scriptural call to “welcome the stranger” in Matthew 25:41-43, asking, “Christ following people like myself — how do we deal with this issue of strangers, and are we going to let them in?”

I've Got Tears in My Ears from Lying on My Back in My Bed While I Cry Over You

WHEN YOU LIVE ALONE, it's funny the things from your past which come back to haunt you8.

Like ... song lyrics!

Today I got this song from the 1960's running through my brain, and I couldn't squelch it.

So I'll share it. and you may curse me for putting it into YOUR brain!

I've Got Tears in My Ears from Lying on My Back in My Bed While I Cry Over You - YouTube:
Homer and Jethro .. oh, that's SO corny!

WARNING: Don't fuss with me on this.  I have another song in the back of my head just BEGGING to get loose!

(Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?)

And if THAT doesn't rot your mind, there's "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport"

But wait ... there's more!

Please, Mister Custer!

Oh don't go yet, I've got a TON of them!

Like, there's that old song the ...(Gargle Gargle Gargle) .......

I was on the phone talking to my new medical insurance provider trying to identify my primary care provider, and confirming one specialist, when the agent stopped talking in mid sentence.]

"Are you there?  Hello?  Is This Thing Working?"   No answer.  The Galaxy 6 Smart  StoopidPhone was showing the Red Screen of Death! BAD!

(Not the actual Red Screen; they don't show that on the website)\

So I pushed the buttons to turn it on again, but I couldn't find the phone number that I had just dialed!

Fortunately, the representative had taking my phone number so she called me back.  We laughed, I praised her phone practices,  she accepted my policy changes and I completed my call.

I only wish the 'good folks' at Samsung (or is it Verizon?) were half as competent as the Insurance Representative.

Then I went to GUNBLOGGERS.COM and found THIS ARTICLE by Eric on the GUNMART blog.
Which starts out:
I wasn’t sure that it was going to be Biden, but I KNEW that this argument was eventually going to be made about ‘smart guns’…Its the argument that ‘The iPhone can be unlocked quickly with just your finger print, so why can’t we do this with guns?’
We don't have a lot of violent crime here in Geekistan, unless it involves drunken college kids dukeing it out in the back yard of the neighborhood kegger.   So I'm not really all that worried.

However, it's a point to remember that sometimes the worst has happened by the time you call 911 and then had to call them again because your $700 "Smart Phone" had just crashed your call.

Remember, when seconds count, your Smart Phone is only 10 seconds plus 5 minutes away ... after it reboots,
By then, anything important that is GOING to happen, HAS happened.

No Electronic Failure Points have been use in making this firearm.
No reboot necessary, anytime.

Trump's Trainwreck or Brewster's Millions?

I do NOT like Donald Trump.  I'm outraged that this is the best candidate the Republicans can find.

Donald Trump talks Ted Cruz, gun control and the Clintons | Fox News Video:
Jan. 10, 2016 - 14:11 - Republican presidential frontrunner on 'Fox News Sunday'

I like everyone else on the Republican Report Card even less, because they seem like children.

ON ONE HAND, Trump is at least a grown up and understands money .... I'm just not sure that this is the same thing as being "a viable candidate" or "presidential timbre" (whatever that means).

On the other hand, everyone who seems to be campaigning for the Democratic Nomination is so extreme that they make Trump seem rational.

Is that what this country has come to?  That there is no rational, responsible candidates available among the hundreds of millions of "natural born" citizens who can lead us?

Trump has predicted that this Presidential election will have 'the highest voter turn-out in history".

I don't think so.

I think that Republicans will either (a) hold their nose and vote for Trump, or (b) stay home on Election Day.

Our Only Hope:   Brewster's Millions!

The Fighting Representative

Rep. Greg Walden addresses U.S. House on situation in Oregon and the West | Oath Keepers
(Actually, I almost blew this off because it's a 24 minute you-tube political video and I hate that  ... stuff.)
But it's a slow night, so I started to watch it just to see what a small-town politico from a rural district (district 2 in Oregon, which includes my home town in Pendleton ... an area larger than a couple of states!) might have to say.

What I FOUND was an impassioned speech which not only addressed Citizens' Rights, but abuses of power on a national level.

Who knew that the local boy could make good?
Representative Walden champions the rule of reasonable logic

Worthwhile quotes:

  • "This is a government which has gone too far, for too long."
  • "How do you have respect for a government which doesn't respect you?"
  • "What possible good will come out of bankrupting a grandmother?"
  • "We have to listen to the People."
  • "Fighting a war ... and dying."

Yes, I still detest politicians .. blood-sucking slugs on the testicles of the voters.

But this speech, by this guy?  I'm thinking MAYBE I should move back to Pendleton so I can vote for him.

It has been a long time since I've actually appreciated a politician.

Maybe there's a few of the "keepers" left.

(I'm not going to embed the speech here; Oathkeepers found it, they deserve the traffic.  And no, I'm not a fan of Oathkeepers, but they have performed a valuable service in bringing this issue to the public attention.)

I'm not easily impressed

When I AM impressed, I'm full-bore pedal-to-the-metal impressed ....

There’s never been an America, but rather several Americas—each a distinct nation. There are eleven nations today. Each looks at violence, as well as everything else, in its own way.

... as I am here, by this article in "Tufts Magazine" (Tuft University Fall 2013 .. dated, but still vital) by Colan Windard

Tufts Magazine / fall 2013:

If you understand the United States as a patchwork of separate nations, each with its own origins and prevailing values, you would hardly expect attitudes toward violence to be uniformly distributed. You would instead be prepared to discover that some parts of the country experience more violence, have a greater tolerance for violent solutions to conflict, and are more protective of the instruments of violence than other parts of the country. That is exactly what the data on violence reveal about the modern United States.

the author has divided the Continental United States into several regions, which exhibit common sociological perspectives.

To these regional definitions, the author as suggested meme-like societal priorities (for want of a better word, which I'm sure will occur to me as soon as I hit "PUBLISH").

This is a research project which somewhat parallel's John Lott's research, as it derives data from the county level rather than obey "state line" research parameters:

Most scholarly research on violence has collected data at the state level, rather than the county level (where the boundaries of the eleven nations are delineated). Still, the trends are clear. The same handful of nations show up again and again at the top and the bottom of state-level figures on deadly violence, capital punishment, and promotion of gun ownership.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of this report is that the author doesn't make an effort to stigmatize populations based on their Second Amendment stance.  Instead, he has some information to offer, and he offers it without a minimum of comment (other than to explain what we're looking at).

Oh, go read it all for yourself.

Politically Correct YouTube Wins Again Because .. They Can!

I don't know much about this, except that "They Can"

Hickok45 YouTube Channel Shut Down - The Firearm Blog:

My friend Matt alerted me to this today. YouTube shut down Hickok45’s YouTube channel for “repeated violations of Google’s Policies”. I do not have any further information regarding this. At this moment there is nothing posted on his Facebook page. Hopefully Hickok45 will figure out what the problem is. I know many of us will jump to the “anti-gun” policies of Google. But let’s not make assumptions until it has been verified by Hickok45 himself.

I last watched one of his videos last night; I think it was whether or not a filing cabinet would stop a bullet.

(it could not)

I have no idea why YOUTUBE would cancel his channel, except that they have some kind of political pressure to discontinue hosting firearms-related posts.

I'll go check my own channel

Nope.  That's working.  Apparently YouTube isn't discontinuing ALL Firearms-related videos.

"The Inquisition Is Strong, Here"

She took them at their word, assumed "Liberal" meant that the college was willing to accept "liberal" view points.

And now they threaten her with either revocation of her tenure, or with a coldly dismissive of removal from her academic position.

Why do I distrust Liberals?
Because they lie.
A professor at a Chicago-area Christian college said Wednesday that administrators were wrong in taking steps to fire her after she asserted that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.
Larycia Hawkins told reporters she met with Wheaton College administrators several times and provided statements explaining her beliefs, which she believes are line up with the college's mission. She said she was initially told further discussion wasn't needed but college officials then changed requirements, saying her tenure would be revoked while she would have to participate in two years of conversations.
Why would this even be an issue at a "Liberal Arts" College?

Wheaton College - Google Search: Wheaton College  Liberal arts college in Wheaton, Illinois Wheaton College is a private American four-year Evangelical Protestant Christian liberal arts college in Wheaton, Illinois, a suburb 25 miles west of Chicago. The college was founded by abolitionists in 1860. Wikipedia
Oh.  I see it now.  "Evangelical Protestant Christian" and "Liberal Arts" are terms challenged by this situation, and the whole "LIBERAL" thing loses.

Big time.

Me?  I'm a Conservative ... and judging by the implied definition of the word "LIBERAL", there's not a Liberal bone in my body.

Lies "Our Father" Told Us

How doth he lie to us? Let us count the ways… – Gun Nuts Media:

So the president has decided that he’s going to take “executive action” on gun control, and naturally he had to give a big self aggrandizing speech to announce his intentions to the world. It’s impossible for this guy to open his mouth on guns without telling some whoppers, so let’s have some fun and count the ridiculous lies he and his administration are pushing today.
Gun Nuts provides us with a plethora of pedantic presidential postulations (aka: "LIES"), which include:
  1. You can buy guns right off the internet with no background check (patently untrue)
  2. 1 in 30 people looking to buy guns on one website had criminal records (impossible to confirm or refute without details ... but it sounds just like a lie; how did 'they' know, and ignores NCIS vetting of purchases)
  3. We need the wide majority of responsible gun owners to join us to demand something better ("All of us need to demand a congress brave enough to stand up to the gun lobby's lies".)   A lie not because Obama's statement of intent is inaccurate, but the statement implies that "responsible gun owners" consider Obama's definition of "Something Better" ... further restrictions on responsible gun ownership ... to be an admirable goal.
  4. More than 30,000 Americans die from gun violence every year.  (A lie because it uses statistics selectively and without definition; that number includes defensive use, etc.)
  5. [there are more, but gun nuts quit out of exasperation]
Maybe it's time to re-run this 2012 parody:

Obama's "Alice in Wonderland" legislation

“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?”
(Alice, in Alice in Wonderland)

The thing is ... Obama's latest and greatest pitfalls for legal gun owners requires us to be what we are not; and if we are not, then we shouldn't be.    But still, we are, and we should. You see?

Obama's gun control options each have legal pitfalls | Reuters:
January 03, 2016
The Washington Post and Politico reported late last week that one of Obama’s main proposals would require some unlicensed gun dealers to get licenses and conduct background checks on potential buyers. Current law exempts smaller dealers who often operate at gun shows and sell online. Obama, who has been thwarted by the Republican-controlled Congress in his push for tighter gun control legislation, could act through an executive order, which would be immediate and carry the force of law. It would also almost certainly prompt lawsuits by gun advocates claiming the president lacks the authority to change the legal definition of who must obtain a dealer’s license.  (emphasis added)
So, what is "an executive order"?   Can the President impose one arbitrarily, without oversight from the Legislative Branch?

According to the online Legal Dictionary:
Most executive orders are issued under specific statutory authority from Congress and  have the force and effect of law.  Such executive orders usually impose sanctions, determine legal rights, limit agency discretion, and require immediate compliance.   Federal courts consider such orders to be the equivalent of federal statutes.  In addition, regulations that are enacted to carry out these executive orders have the status of law as long as they reasonably relate to the statutory authority.   An administrative action that is carried out under a valid executive order is similar to an agency action that is carried out under a federal statute.  In each case, the agency's authority to enact rules and to issue orders comes from Congress. (emphasis added)
Presidential Executive Orders can NOT be imposed (or "carry the force of law") if Congress does not agree that the context of the Executive order agrees with the content and intent of the  Constitution.

Which is to say that the Presidential Executive Order is NOT LEGAL if it is not "Constitutional".

Now, if Obama's intent is to "... require some unlicensed gun dealers to get licenses and conduct background checks on potential buyers ....", then perhaps he should look at the existing administrative barriers which prevent individuals from qualifying for a 'gun dealer license.
There are many people who would sell a 'large volume' of firearms, but who would not currently qualify for a dealer license.  Is this a "Catch 22"?

And just what constitutes a "Dealer", anyway?  Is the criteria for definition of a "dealer" the volume of business conducted by an individual?  If so, is it the volume in terms of Number Of Firearms Sold Per Anum, or is it the Cash Value of Firearms Transactions Per Anum?

This is a grey area which has been conveniently allowed to endure for decades, by the government; and we can only guess why they have been reluctant to resolve the issue.

Our President seems to require those of us who would sell even a minimal number of firearms (not defined in federal law) to register as "Dealers", but he/they will not define the term for our edification.

Mister President! Mister President ... one question, please?

CNN to host Obama town hall on guns in America - CNNPolitics.com:
Obama will sit down with Cooper at 8 p.m. ET for the event, titled "Guns in America." The event's timing coincides with the fifth anniversary, next Friday, of the shooting of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, in a rampage that left six dead and 13 others wounded. In addition to discussing gun issues with Cooper, Obama will also take questions from the audience on the issue.'

I hope that somebody asks this one question of the President:

Mister President, what do you understand is the meaning of the expression:

Last but not least, I highly recommend against “nation building” or any other military involvement of Western powers in the middle east. I have objected to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan from the very start, knowing that no one can reform Islamic societies other than Muslims themselves, and that this may take centuries to unfold. Instead I recommend containment. In other words, closing the borders, reducing all interactions with Islamic countries to the bare minimum, and investing resources in finding alternatives to middle eastern oil.

This is an extensive, and detailed summary of the problem of Jihadi's infiltrating Europe (and America).   I recommend reading.

In A Perfect World

The New England Journal of Medicine (*NEJM: in an article titled "Rooting Out Gun Violence") * is once again lamenting the terrible lack of cooperation on the part of gun-owners with the Health Issue improvements they have suggested.

*(H/T:  Ammoland,  Gunbloggers.com and The Gun Feed.com)

In A Perfect World --

Old people, women, even children would be protected from by vicious men who want to hurt us.

In A Perfect World, when we are assaulted by people who want to hurt us for the sheer joy of the pain, or for gain, or for fury unabated ... we would be able to summon help by pushing a button and rescuers would magically appear and save us from our tormentors.

This is not a perfect world, and the police ("To Protect And To Save") have no obligation to protect or to save us.  Nor have they the resources to do so, however much they would like to.

So we carry guns, because "Sam Colt Made All Men Equal".  And also mothers and fathers.

Here's how it sounds from the side of the fence:
Here we are again. Less than a year ago, an editorial in the Journal by Kassirer reexamined the massive public health problem of gun violence in the United States,1 and a Perspective article by Sacks, born of a personal tragedy, lamented the defunding of research on firearm-injury prevention.2 Kassirer called for electing “lawmakers at all levels of government with the courage to defy gun lobbyists,” so that essential regulatory changes can finally be enacted — as physicians, public health experts, and others have been recommending for decades. But in early December, the day after a young couple turned up at a holiday party in San Bernardino, California, with semiautomatic weapons and went on a shooting rampage, killing 14 people and injuring 21.
NEJM Translation:  We keep telling you that guns are bad, but you won't listen to us and ... see?  THIS is what happens when you don't listen to us!

I hate it when grown men whine, but it seems endemic in the academic community.  They have chosen a side, and they don't recognize the other side; which is those who feel themselves most vulnerable.

Here, they have decided that all guns are bad, so nobody should own guns.  Period.

They studiously ignore the fact that the reason why Americans refuse to give up their guns is that the criminals won't give up THEIR guns!

It's not that we're unaware of the abuses of firearms ownership.

It's just that we, the law-abiding community, understand that if we are unable to defend ourselves, then nobody else is there to step up for us.

Certainly, there are no members of the Academic Community who are willing to commit to our personal defense; nobody blames them for that, it's a tough job and they are not qualified even if they would accept the onerous duty.

The Academics have the courage to (defend) ... research on firearm-injury prevention
but they don't have the ability to provide "firearm-injury prevention".   That's The Way Of The Academic.

They may bemoan the real-world ethics;  they may rail against the thick-headedness of the hoi polloi who insist on the right to defend themselves.  But they are unable or unwilling to provide and alternate solution which will comfort the man whose family has been taken from him during a home-invasion.

It's not a Perfect World.

I have no idea ....

... but on New Years Eve, it's refreshing to find a video which is not filled with explosions and drunken college students going OOOOOOOO WAAAAAAH!

Insane Clown Posse Joke? Guns are not an individual right in Illinois?

Illinois General Assembly - Bill Status for HR0855:
Synopsis:
As Introduced Urges the courts, especially the United States Supreme Court, to adhere to the clear wording of the Second Amendment being a right afforded to state-sponsored militias and not individuals.
This has been all over the gun blogger-net for the past couple of days.  Those fun-loving scamps in the Illinois Legislature (who always reminded me of the characters in M*A*S*H) have a new trick to play on their fellow citizens.

They are were going to abrogate U.S. Supreme Court decisions which have determined that firearms ownership is an individual right.

Which completely goes against both the HELLER and the MACDONALD decisions.

The smart money today is on failure of the bill, though, as rats supporters are abandoning the sinking ship movement.  Check out the history in the House (ref: link above):

Need we mention that Welch (7th District) , Andrade (40th District), and Reaves-Harris (10th District) are all Democrats?   They were all "ME TOO!" when it looked like a good political move.

But apparently  the voters are not looking kindly on this abrogation of their civil rights.   Illinois is known as a "swing state", and the vote of the populace might go either way.

Also, the governor of Illinois, Bruce Rauner, is a Republican. He might have had a thing or two to say about this.

Gutting the Second Amendment: Fear and Loathing in Academia

There was a time, after I had graduated from high school, and after I had graduated from college, and after I had graduated from Viet Nam, when I was trying to decide what to do with the rest of my life.

I thought I would like to go back to school for an academic degree.  I thought perhaps I would like to teach, at a college level. I knew that I liked to teach.  I had the education, I had the experience, so perhaps I had something to offer to the next generation.

Seeking advice, I asked my Mom what she thought about it.

She said (not her exact words, although I present this as a quote:

"Well, Honey, you do what you think is best.  But when people ask me what my son is doing with his life, is it okay with you if I just tell them you're running a whore-house?"

Point well taken.  I got into computer systems analysis, and while I never thought I was leading an honest life, at least I could hold my head up among the relatives during the annual Summer Family Reunions.

Now I'm looking at an article in the New York Times titled "Guns and Racism" by Gary Guting.
 (H/T: David Codrea)

It starts out well:
Those of us in favor of stronger laws to abate gun violence mostly support our cause by arguing against the claims of the gun lobby (roughly, the N.R.A. and gun manufacturers). It should by now be obvious that this is a waste of time. The case for action is overwhelming, but there’s no chance of convincing the entrenched minority who are so personally (or financially) invested in gun ownership. Legislative efforts have failed because the opposition is more deeply committed — more energized, more organized, more persistent.

There are a few comments in this oh-so-fairly-reasoned article which I find disturbing.

Yes, those of us who are firm supporters of our Civil Rights are certainly "entrenched"; but it bothers me that the author suggests that we are minions of "the N.R.A. (sic) and gun manufacturers".

I'm not certain what incentives these nefarious groups are supposedly using to encourage firearms owners to support their evil actions, but I always thought that the NRA was an organization created by and for firearms owners .. and when the NRA doesn't speak for us, their membership plummets.

I don't particularly like the NRA .. I find them too liberal, usually; but I guess they have to tone down the rhetoric.  As far as the gun manufacturers .... when they don't do what we (firearms owners) want them to do, they lose business.

(There was a little contretemps with Smith &Wesson a few years ago, when they seemed to have kow-towed to gun-control influences; they lost a LOT of business from firearms owners over that one.  So it doesn't seem to me as if the firearms manufacturers are driving the Second Amendment dialogue in this country.)

So, who is driving the gun-owner rhetoric?  Certainly not the manufacturers!.  Might it be .. the gun owners?  Maybe the gun-owners are not puppets of industry or organizations, but are independently just really cranky people who don't want other people telling them that they are 'bad' because they stand up for their civil rights?

But wait!  There's more.

... the basic motivation of the pro-gun movement is freedom from government interference. They talk about guns for self-defense, but their core concern is their constitutional right to bear arms, which they see as the foundation of American freedom. The right to own a gun is, as the N.R.A. website puts it, “the right that protects all other rights.” Their galvanizing passion is a hatred of tyranny. Like many other powerful political movements, the gun lobby is driven by hatred of a fundamental evil that it sees as a threat to our way of life — an existential threat — quite apart from any specific local or occasional dangers.
It's so NICE to see that someone actually 'gets it', in the sense that ... firearms owners are not opposing gun-control measures out of 'fear', but out of a defense of the Constitution, civil liberties, and enumerated rights.

And yes, we do hate it when people tell us what to do.  Or not to do.  This is America, after all.

Then he goes and says something stupid; like playing the Racism Card:

But few of us actually see guns as existential threats to fundamental American values. In this, however, we are mistaken. Our permissive gun laws are a manifestation of racism, an evil that, in other contexts, most gun-control advocates see as a fundamental threat to American society.
Mr. Guting lives in Chicago, and his perception is:

I’m not particularly afraid, since — like most Chicagoans — I’m hardly ever where the violence occurs. There’s something to worry about only if you live in certain overwhelmingly black communities on the West and South sides of town. (The papers publish helpful maps showing how the killings are distributed.) These are where almost all the shootings occur, and the large majority of victims (and perpetrators) are black.

[Mr. Guting decries the plight of Chicago's poor negro black, and avoids that part of town because (a) it's dangerous and (b) he can.  But he doesn't speak of his efforts to raise the socio-economic plight of the community.  Still, he feels free to criticize  the dreadful conditions in his community, which he attempts to alleviate by publishing an opinion article in the New York Times ... not the Chicago Trib!   He's not "part of the problem", but he still thinks it's a stinking rotten shame and it's not his fault even though he lives (and presumably votes) in the same city.  He's too proud to publish his criticism in the Chicago paper because, apparently, it's not a Chicago problem; it's an NRA problem.  Well, whatever ... it's not HIS problem!]

And that is the fault of Second Amendment defenders because ... what?

He goes on to decry the prevalence of gun violence in black parts of town.
The case for the racist effect of our permissive gun laws is especially powerful.  There’s no way of explaining away all these deaths as aberrations. If we fail to oppose with equal passion and vigor the relentless political pressure of (mostly white) gun advocates, we force a large number of black citizens to live with the constant threat of gun violence. We’re in effect letting the Second Amendment trump the Fourteenth Amendment, implicitly preferring the right of gun ownership to the right of black people to live free from fear.

I live in Oregon.  And this is MY fault?

Oh dear!
What is this "relentless political pressure of (mostly white) gun advocates" of which you speak?  Would it ... possibly ... be that we advocate for equal rights for all Americans, even if we (as you seem to imply) that 'some of us' seem to "force ... black citizens" to bear the onerous burden of living under their constitutional right to keep and bear arms?

Might part of the problem be that the EVIL Chicago Aldermen have decreed Chicago a city-wide Gun Free Zone, where honest citizens cannot defend themselves with the same (currently illegal) firearms that gang-bangers have?

[I know ... firearms ownership is strictly prohibited there ... which means that it is a GUN FREE ZONE to the criminals who have already demonstrated a total contempt for the Rule Of Law.   The only people who don't have guns are the law-abiding citizens.]

Isn't that a Chicago Gun Free Zones problem, and not an American Constitution problem?

What is the root cause of the "racist effect of our permissive gun laws"?

We ... legal firearms owners ... just want to protect our civil rights; rights which we support for ALL Americans.

The NRA was started to counter the racist attitudes during post-civil war times, when "liberals" like you (Democrats) wanted to keep firearms out of the hands of black people.

Is it your contention, Mr. Guting, that Second Amendment Advocates are conspiring against black people?  Because that's the way it sounds, using your words.

"Permissive gun laws" are a reflection of the Constitutional rights of ALL Americans.
What you consider "permissive", we consider "reasonable, common-sense gun rights".

NOBODY who cares about the Second Amendment would ever advocate any political stance which would undermine those rights; because if Black People can be denied their constitutional rights, then anybody would be threatened by the same kind of arbitrary infringement.

It seems to me, Mr. Guting, that you are the racist in the wood pile.   You are the one who has raised the proposition that one racial group would be accorded, and another denied, their rights.

The Second Amendment doesn't work that way.

Americans don't work that way.

Well .. perhaps a few pie-in-the-sky Academics have their heads so firmly entrenched in their nether regions that they don't know what the meaning of the words  "Will Not Be Infringed" is.  It applies to everybody, equally, without regard to race, creed or religion.

The rest of us are QUITE clear in our understanding that the Constitution of the United States of America is NOT a "living document", which might be subject to various and changeable interpretations based on YOUR crappy attitude.

Sir.

Assault Weapons Ban of 2015

I just scanned the proposed Assault Weapons Ban of 2015, and someone went to a lot of trouble to put it together.

They must be feeling pretty smug about having avoided the pitfalls which made the last Assault Weapons Bans of the past patently unworkable.

Still, they persist in worrying about such things as "Barrel Shrouds" ... and I ask you why that cosmetic feature would turn a rifle into an Assault Weapon.  (NB:  That 1903A3 Springfield rifle has limited capacity, does not feed from a detachable magazine, but might conceivably be considered an "Assault Weapon" since there is a piece of wood the wraps around the barrel.)

Question: The bill includes an extensive list of "exempt" make and model of existing rifles.  So what happens next year when a major manufacturer creates a new model of an existing "exempt" rifle?  Do they have to add a rider to the law, if enacted?   That seems cumbersome to me.

Oh, and they have another 'cute trick'

Text - H.R.4269 - 114th Congress (2015-2016): Assault Weapons Ban of 2015 | Congress.gov | Library of Congress: If any provision of this Act, an amendment made by this Act, or the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstance is held to be unconstitutional, the remainder of this Act, the amendments made by this Act, and the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstance shall not be affected thereby.

Well, at least the admit to the mere possibility that they may be fallible.

Still, I think the whole thing infringes upon my Second Amendment Rights, and while I try to keep this a Family Friendly resource, I can only reach this conclusion.

Fuck you, Congress, you parsimonious pandering plethora of Political Pansies.

What's the worst that can happen?..

Nobody needs to carry a firearm in America, because the police are there to protect you.
If you are in fear, just call a policeman.   They are professionals; they are qualified to evaluate the situation and provide an appropriate response.

If you have a gun, you'll probably just make matters worse.  You might shoot an innocent bystander!

Besides, what's the worst that can happen?
