Superintendent of Schools Joseph Erardi Jr. stood before about 100 people at Newtown Middle School on Thursday night and vowed he would never sign an agreement allowing teachers to carry guns in the town’s schools.
The declaration came a day after Jason Adams, an eighth-grade science teacher with a valid pistol permit, was arrested after bringing a pistol into the middle school.
Adams, who has taught at Newtown Middle School for 10 years, was charged with possession of a weapon on school property, a felony offense. He is on administrative leave with pay.
I'm sorry. Somebody tried.
If it saves just one...
Oh, You don't want to hear about that, either. Do you?
It's funny how the shoe pinches, when it's on the 'other' foot,
Isn't it?
PART 01: The question is whether a Methodist college should sponsor a "shooting program". The Alumni are "up in arms" because they believe that a religious institutions should not promote any activity which involves guns.
While it's not clear what kind of 'shooting sports program' is involved, it seems reasonable to assume that this is a .22 caliber rifle/smallbore/bullseye target competition activity.
In a word, it's similar to throwing darts in a pub.
Oh, wait; that would also be contrary to religious priorities.
"It's clear that the students don't want guns on campus, the faculty don't want guns on campus, the parents of students don't want guns on campus and the we feel the majority of Kansas doesn't want this either," says Meagen Youngdahl with the Kansas Coalition for a Gun-Free Campus.
Oh. That's okay, then. If students, faculty, parents AND "Kansas" are all agreed that they don't want guns on campus, the solution is simple, and obvious:
Don't bring a gun on campus.
See how easy that was?
Now, if you can only convince that wild-eyed 18-year-old maniac with a stolen gun that he shouldn't shoot up your campus, there should no problem. (PS: You might consider sending an email to ISIS ... you know, those guys with that 'other' religious view ... telling them that they can not bring guns on campus, either. That should solve THAT problem.)
Nobody wants to take your guns. That’s what most mainstream pro-gun control Democrats say ad nauseam at various rallies. There’s also the “I support the Second Amendment, but…” that advocates of gun control say prior to offering some pie-in-the-sky policy proposals that usually venture into bans on so-called assault rifles, limiting magazine sizes, or an all-out ban on semi-automatic firearms. That’s essentially a gun ban.
I challenge you to quote any declaration about Gun Control which the liberals will proffer, which does not include the word "but". BUT means that they don't want to take your guns away, "BUT ...." they really do.
They don't want to take your guns away "BUT" they don't like scary rifles. They don't want to take your guns away "BUT" they don't like "high capacity magazines". They don't want to take your guns away "BUT" they don't see any reason why anyone would want to have a (fill in the blank)
They don't want to take your guns away "BUT" they think that a 30 round magazine has no redeeming qualities (fill in the number ... either over or under "30 rounds").
They don't want to take your guns away "BUT" they don't understand why anyone needs an automatic weapon? (and By The Way, they don't really have a clear understanding of the difference between "Automatic" and "Semi-Automatic" weapon; it doesn't really matter, though, because to them they're all the same and they don't want you to have them!)
They keep asking for legal firearms owners to "compromise" on gun control issues, but they don't often suggest compromises which they are willing to offer.
That's because they don't have to offer anything ... the Second Amendment already acknowledges the right to keep and bear arms, and there's nothing left for them to give which will expand the rights which WE already have.
All they can do is to chip away at our constitutional rights with niggling little dings and dents, until all we have left is the car-wreck which they will allow us ... and then they want to take the hubcaps and the chrome off the fender, too!
It would serve no purpose to identify "they" or "them". You know who they are.
THEY are the people who think that 'guns' are so bad, there is no legitimate purpose for anyone to own one. They think that guns have no redeeming value, and guns are the source of mayhem and destruction.
They forget (or choose not to remember) the Watts riots , and armed Korean shop owners standing guard on the roof of their stores .... those stores which, after the riots were over, were the only commercial establishments left standing, unlooted: and those businesses were where the local residents calmly went to shop when the riots were over.
So when somebody tells you that you're over-reacting about your second amendment rights, and "nobody wants to take your guns", you might think about their lying eyes and remember that they either intend to stab you in the back, or take away your means to defend your self, your home, your family and your property.
Everybody wants to take away your guns. Anybody who says different is not your friend.
Videos from three Arab-Australian brothers have been shared everywhere on social media in recent days as they’ve turned fears of terrorism into fodder for pranks. They dress up in “traditional” Arab dress, walk up on unsuspecting citizens, and throw backpack “bombs” at random citizens before running away, capturing the victim’s desperate attempts at escaping on hidden cameras.
Apparently there is even a sham element where one or more of these fun-loving adolescents (?) is reported to have been shot during such an ill-considered act of sophomoric japery.
These heckle-and-jeckle idiots have so far got away with their shenanigans in Australia because that country's citizens has been emasculated disarmed by their government.
But even if there is little danger of being shot, some people won't tolerate rude behavior.
Every time there's a massacre at a school, like the recent one in Oregon, it reignites the debate for more gun control -- not only because of the mass shootings, but because of the hundreds of incidents of gun violence every day on our streets and in our homes. One idea that keeps coming up is smart guns. These are firearms that only work when they're fired by their owner. It seems that "gee whiz" technology is seeping into every corner of our lives. Why not guns? *
CBS had a "feature" about Smart Guns, which did not convince me that they are the "wave of the future"/
Why am I not convinced?
I have a Smart Phone. It turns itself off and on willy-nilly, and I have no idea why. So I have to wait a few minutes for it to sort itself out.
Which might not ever happen; too often, I have to turn it off and wait "a while", whether I would prefer to or not.
That's marginal in a cell phone; that's unacceptable in a defensive weapon.
If I have the need to use my firearm, I am not willing to 'wait a minute' for it to sort itself out.
Whether in a competitive environment (when two seconds is an eternity) or in a home defense situation (when two seconds is LITERALLY the difference between a few more years of life, or an eternity without it) ... firearm reliability is always ALWAYS the most important characteristic of a gun I can bet my life on. Whether it's appropriate to shoot? Whether the target needs to be engaged?
That determination is MY job; If I make a mistake, at least I know I won't die waiting for the chip to warm up!
For me, Gun Control means that I'm in total control of my firearms. It doesn't mean that I willingly relinquish my ability to use my defensive (or hunting, or competitive) firearm when, where and how I require.
* It seems that "gee whiz" technology is seeping into every corner of our lives. Why not guns?
Cell phones are just toys; guns are weapons. And whenever we relinquish control of our weapons to 'technology', we put our lives on the line.
I'm not willing to abrogate my life to (an reliable) computer chip.
My friend Rivrdog is protesting a Porland, Oregon school district decision which sent a studtnt home for wearing a shirt ".. with Battlefleld Cross .." on it.
Back to School ...back to the School Board, that is... The Gresham/Barlow School District, which sent a student home for wearing a t-shirt with the Battlefield Cross on it, is meeting tonight. Yours truly will put on a coat and tie, my Oregon Honorable Service Medal, and sortie out to remind said School Board what Citizenship means.
An eighth-grader was sent home from school for wearing a t-shirt honoring fallen troops—because it had a gun on it.
The principal at Dexter McCarty Middle School in Gresham, Ore., gave Alan Holmes a choice: Remove the shirt, which bore the message "‘Standing for Those Who Stood for Us," or leave school.
His father came to pick him up.
"They won't let me wear a shirt that supports the people that keep us free, I'm not gonna support them," Alan said.
Alan's family stood by his decision and his father said he would have done the same thing.
Good for him. I'm not sure I would have demonstrated such courage when I was his age.
As has been the case in previous years, two Texas high schools recently exchanged gifts as a goodwill gesture following a football game. Atascocita High School band members presented Summer Creek High School with a bucket containing fruit and candy.
Atascocita H.S. students were subsequently suspended because the fruit basket "... included a coconut, a pineapple and a small watermelon."
The article didn't mention whether the opposing school objected to the gift. We're pretty sure they would have mentioned it.
Though it is unclear which of the contents Atascocita administrators found offensive, they were pretty direct in accusing the kids of racism.
I don't know about this one. Perhaps it was a left-handed racial insult to the opposing school, maybe it was not. Apparently, the Atascocita (I can't even say that word! Is that a subtle slam against Hispanic people?) school administrators thought that the gift was something other than what it purported to be.
Concealed Carry on Campus Coming To Texas
From May 30, 2015 Reuters:
The Republican-controlled Texas Senate voted on Saturday to allow the licensed carrying of concealed handguns in most state university buildings.
The measure includes a caveat that lets college presidents designate "gun-free zones" on their campuses.
What do you want to bet that most college presidents designate their entire campus a "Gun Free Zone"?
Oregon State law also allows the same rights.
University administrators immediately declared that University employees found "packing" faced termination of employment. Students faced termination of enrollment.
College folks do not take it kindly, when someone tells them how to run their campus. And yes, they are within their legal rights to undermine YOUR Constitutional rights!
Since I am neither an employee nor a student, I can carry on campus ... but the campus police can still eject me at their pleasure.
Universities still enforce "Free Speech Zones" too, which means that those who wish to exercise their First amendment rights can be ejected if they prefer to orate where the students hang out instead of in an obscure corner of the campus.
Welcome to the conclave of Constitutional Hell .. the universities which are supposed to be teaching our young people to think for themselves.
New Jersey fifth-grader Aarin Moody got a lesson in his school's zero tolerance policy after being suspended all of last week for bringing a foam Nerf gun bullet to school, according to his mom.
I don't know about you, but *I* am quite intimidated!
Not by the foam rubber 'bullets'; the scarey school folks, though, freak me out. *Did I mention that this was New Jersey?*
When I was in Grade School, in a Previous Century Not To Be Named, we (students in 6th Grade) were trading miniature replicas of pistols and rifles like they were Sports Cards. No special reason, they were just cool.
The same thing could get a sixth grader jailed today. Funny ... we didn't have any school shootings back when guns were just 'stuff'.
I remember once I brought my father's "exotic" bullet collection to school for Show And Tell. Everybody wanted to take a closer look at them. But I don't remember anyone killing anyone because they got too excited.
I guess we weren't as "cool" as we thought we were.
Chinese state media say 15 people have been killed in an attack in the country's troubled western Xinjiang region.
The official Xinhua News Agency says 14 other people were injured in what it said was a terrorist attack Friday in Shache county.
The Tianshan news portal said Saturday that the attackers used vehicles, knives and explosives in the assault. It said the dead included 11 of the attackers.
Such attacks have claimed dozens of lives in Xinjiang over the past year. Members of the region's Muslim Uighur minority group have bristled under what they say is repressive Chinese government rule.
Step Away From The Camera -- Or There Will Be Trouble!
Is this the 21st Century's version of "The War of Northern Aggression"?
After all the controversy about our Southern border and the easy access by illegal aliens .... what's with the recent series of assaults on American citizens attempting to re-enter their country while returning from a trip through Canada? The assailants? The U.S. Border Patrol!
DES MOINES, Iowa —Boy Scouts from Troop No. 111 witnessed an intense chain of events after one of their members snapped a picture of a federal officer working the border entry point.
Short version of the story: a troop of Boy Scouts from Iowa attempted to enter Alaska after the end of their tour through Canada. A member of the troop took a picture of the Border Patrolman, who got all panty-wadded and told him that it was illegal to take the picture. Prison, fines, etc. Scared the troop leader, even. Then the Federal Agent insisted that they unload ALL their gear and luggage so it could be searched.
While they were attempting to comply, the patrolman took exception to one boy who grabbed a suitcase "without authorization" ... and pointed his loaded handgun at the kid's head.
Wow! What if the kid had a kilo of Mexican Black Tar Heroin in his suitcase (as is not infrequent at the Southern Border)???
Oh, by the way: the Border Patrol says it never happened.
(... and if it did, you can't prove it because we've got the pictures.)
But there are some pictures, taken during the search, to prove at least THAT part of the story.
At the Jackman, Maine, border crossing into the United States, I get interrogated about what I have in my car. And not just the three juicy Canada-bought clementines, either. "What is your relation to these children?" brusquely demands the young border guard who examines my two daughters' passports and my own. They do have their mother's last name, and they do look somewhat Asian. I'm white. Maybe he's curious. So I don't give him any lip.
A reporter from Reason Magazine "We Deal in Lead, Friend!" (Lead Stories, that is) wrote that when he was "harassed" by a dubious Border Patrolman, he tried to record the encounter on his IPhone. The Main RoboCop twisted his arm to confiscate the cell phone.
"Never mind. Follow me into lane one, please. We're going to have to search your vehicle. Please give me your driver's license." I hand it to him, then park the car in the area he indicates. "Now please get out of the car and follow me inside." I grab my iPhone off the dash, hit the record button, and tell him politely: "For my protection, officer, I'm now recording what's happening." He stays silent. I step out of the car, and without warning, he physically attacks—that is, he wrestles the phone from my hand, twisting my arm in the process. I'm stunned.
When the reporter asked why it was illegal to photograph Border Guards during the incident, the response was: "Because". After the reporter agreed to delete the video from his IPhone, he and his children were released. Sort of, like "Free Range Chickens". The problem was not their nationality nor their credentials, but that they had the effrontery to photograph "Border Agents" during the performance of their duties.
Both of these incidents were intensely intimidating to the victims (reminder: all American Citizens) who were able establish their identities and their citizenship. When they were allowed the opportunity.
Are you contemplating a vacation tour of Colorful Canada this summer? Plan to come back to America?
Now, if you were not a credentialed American, and you were crossing our SOUTHERN border?
No problem.
There is a moral to this story, but I fail to see it.
After countless headlines about students being expelled for taking toy guns and knives and other minor weapons to school, the Georgia Legislature passed Thursday night a measure to end the so-called zero tolerance policy.
House Bill 826 creates a new class of weapon and gives schools authority to deal with them when students bring them on campus or a school bus. However, the law continues to permit law enforcement to press charges if any weapon is used in a threatening manner.
An Ohio high school student has already been jailed and kicked out of school for having a pocket knife in his car, and now he fears he could lose his dream of serving in the Army.
Jordan Wiser, a student at Ashtabula County Technical School in Jefferson, is finishing up his senior year from home after school officials searched his car in December and found the folding knife and an Airsoft gun. School officials called police, who charged him with illegal conveyance of a weapon onto a school ground based on the three-inch knife.
I love Zero Tolerance Rules, don't you? They're so charmingly ... all-inclusive!
Remember Switch-Blade Knifes? Back in the Fantastic Fifties and the Sexy Sixties, even Russ Tamblyn had one!
Even I had one. Well, not a switchblade. Just a little pocket-knife that I carried because .. well, every boy did. (I mainly used my pocket knife for cleaning the crud under my fingernails, and sharpening my quill pen in school.)
Today, students use G2 flow-tip pens and never never carry a knife. After all, nobody has to skin a squirrel for dinner hardly ever anymore.
The thing is ... the knife in THIS story was " ... part of his first responder's kit and can be used for slicing an
accident victim's seatbelt, [and] was found tucked inside his EMT medical vest
in the trunk of the car."
Doesn't sound like a reasonable placement if you expect to use your knife in a fight on the schoolgrounds.
In fact, the school didn't even try to make noises about it being an offensive weapon. That's the really neat thing about Zero Tolerance. It doesn't have to make sense, it's just what it is, and the Zero Tolerance rules can be applied freely without any expectations that it might meet conditions of reasonability.
School Administrators are like Politicians; what they do doesn't have to make sense, as long as they demonstrate the appearance of "doing something". (Hmmm .. sounds like Gun Control laws, doesn't it?)
You have to wonder, when school administrators shy from judgement calls, exactly what lessons they are teaching our children and grandchildren.
Rigidity, Righteousness and Rules.
That's a LOT easier to teach than "Reading, 'Riting and 'Rithmatic.
Don't we pay these people enough, to attract intelligent people? Or, do we pay them too much?
The school administrators, who justified their car search based on rules in the student
handbook, found the knife, called the police, and refused the teenager
the right to call an attorney, according to Wiser. Arrested and placed
in jail, a judge ordered a psychological test and a half a million bond,
and when the youngster passed that, another judge reduced bail to
$50,000. But he conditioned that on an ankle monitor and the removal of
any guns in the home to his grandfather’s house.
“The next judge freaked out about me even knowing what a gun is and
put a no-contact order against me and my grandparents. My grandfather is
dying right now and I can’t get within 500 feet of him,” Wiser related.
Ironically, at his rural Ohio school, kids get caught with pocket
knives all the time Wiser told The Post, but they’re only suspended.
Thus, a petition that sprang up afterwards calling for a reduction of
charges to a misdemeanor garnered a quick 1,349 signatures and inflamed
Harold Specht, Chief Assistant Prosecutor for Ashtabula County.
It's still too soon to tell what the real story is, and if young Wiser has exaggerated the circumstances and conditions of his arrest and subsequent actions by 'authorities' ... it's still too soon to tell.
We will be following up on this story. Personally, I'm curious about what laws in Ohio makes it a felony for a teenager to carry a knife (either 3" or 4" blade ... reports vary) in his personal automobile ... and what arbitrary school rules obviate Constitutional rules against Search and Seizure in a Felony prosecution?
Never mind the question about "knives" vs "guns".
It's not about guns (or knives) ... it's about "Control"
