Why?
Because it's cheaper than doing "The Hard Thing", which is to address the societal ills which lead to acts of violence by the most resource-poor citizens in the country.
People who take an "assault weapon" into a shopping mall with the intent to kill strangers are ... a phenomenon which can be predicted. And they are a problem.
But we have other problems which are more important, and more wide-reaching in terms of the effect they have on our country.
We have a Welfare State, tantamount to Socialism, which (instead of creating jobs for those who WOULD work ... except that they have not been taught the value of an honest day's work for an honest day's pay) would help to insure that anyone who wants to work, can work.\
Except that the system doesn't work.
There are no "entry level" jobs. Nobody is interested in applying for jobs which aren't there.
Eventually, because they're discouraged, these young men would rather fight than switch to a "day job".
Enter WELFARE:
We pay men not to work. That's the only way they can earn a wage, because they left school (even if they graduated) with NO job skills and only an elementary-level education.
We pay unmarried women to have babies; that's their only way to 'earn' a wage because that's the how their mothers survived. This is now into the Fifth generation of "Welfare Moms".
"Welfare Dads" are .... absent.
In the meantime, when we try to find a problem to "GUN VIOLENCE", we focus our attention on "mental health" problems as the FIX; and that's not working either. Besides, "mental illness has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the "gun violence":
It's too easy to say "Mental Illness" is the problem, but there is no yardstick to identify someone who is prone to yielding to destructive behavior:
Gun Research: The Truth Is Already Out There – Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership:
Too many overstate the role that mental illnesses play in the commission of violence, including violence done with guns. While most mass murderers of strangers probably have some, usually untreated, mental illness contributing to their acts, these events are extremely rare. The truth is that people with mental illness are no more likely to cause violence and much more likely to become victims than those in the general population. So, Doctors are NOT saying that the "problem with guns" is based primarily on Mental Illness. It's not a medical problem.
What they ARE saying is, it's a societal problem:
But poor urban minority youth with little hope in their futures find identity in gangs, get pulled into drug addiction or dealing, and comprise the largest numbers of both perpetrators and victims of shootings. Individuals’ networks and associations highly correlate with risks of violence, and suggest potentially effective ways to intervene preventively. (sic)So, does anyone here think that our National Leadership is working to resolve "societal issues"?
No? So what DO they do to resolve the "problem"?
(+) Vote for more Welfare checks? Absolutely.
(-) Encourage rewarding job training for unskilled workers? Not so much.
(-) Discourage 'casual sex' between couples who don't have a steady job between them?
Not at all.
(-) Require "Welfare Mothers" to identify the father of their child, and require child support?
Not as easy as it seems, when the "Welfare Mothers" have casual sex with 'itinerant' men who are not even expected to stay through a pregnancy ... let alone support a child and stick around to be a FATHER to their children.
Not going to happen in THIS lifetime.
Firearms Violence is NOT primarily the fault of ghetto-dwellers.
It's entirely the fault of "The Folks On The Hill", who have the tripartite goals of:
(1) getting re-elected
(2) looking good on Television
(3) seeming to be "doing something", while in real life just trying to hold on to their cushy job.
Freankly, I have more respect for the drugged-out hooker with six children by six fathers and a drug habit which must be fed every day, than I do for the sleazy politician with the carefully coiffed silver hair and a car, driver and bodyguard which are provided by the Federal government.
At least the hooker acknowledges who and what she is.
Which is not significantly different from the politician, except that she doesn't lie about her job.
And she doesn't' cost as much, but she DOES provide an honest "Bang For Your Buck".
(I do SO wish for a Politician who is so honest! But this is an election year, so that's not going to happen!)
(I bet you thought I was going to talk about Public Shootings! Well, I was, but the whole thing kind of 'morphed' and I discovered that the greatest danger to our country wasn't hookers, or murderers, but ... politicians.)

The biggest problem affecting both political parties is who their nominee for president might be, and will that person make a good president.
