As an American citizen, I would be a little upset too if some redneck cop stuck the muzzel of an M4 in my face, or even pointed it a me for no good reason.
You have already judged the actors. I'm not making apologies for the people you see, but maybe you might be pointing your finger at the officers who sent these boys into Never-Never Land, instead of the National Guard boys who are without choice.
Uniform of the day? Weapons to be drawn? Formation to assume?
No, it's not "Just Following Orders" ... how many rounds were fired?
But your point is valid. When does a "movement order" become something more than these boys had ever expected.
I don't think the point of discussion should be directed at the National Guard (or even U.S. Army) troops who showed up at Ferguson.
Maybe ... and thank you for raising the issue ... we should be asking how much time these troops have been exposed to the philosophical (legal?) discussion about what is a "Legal Order".
So far, I don't think that question has been raised. But I bet it will be raised soon, and often. And appropriately.
According to the news there are no Army of National Guard at Ferguson. What showed up was the State Highway Patrol. Other than that it has been purely local cops.
