The Barrett .50-BMG is Practical!

This is, I swear it, the last comment for a long LONG time about the .50-BMG.

It's just that I think we need some perspective on the issue, and I've spent a lot of time talking about the 'political' aspects of this fine rifle in America.

Now it's time we spend a moment considering the Military aspect.

We can do this, I think, thanks to a reference from the excellent Michael Bane Blog.

Michael shows us how much the U.S. Military Appreciates the contribution made by Mr. Barrett.

Barrett's Model M107 Rifle System Selected By the US Army As One of the Top Ten Inventions For CY2004

Barrett M107 LRSR Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc has recently earned several honors that reflect on the commitment the company has to providing the soldier with the best .50 caliber long-range sniper rifle in the world. This week we have been again been recognized for the US Army's M107 LRSR.

Barrett M107 was selected by the Chief of Staff Office of the US Army as one of the "Top Ten Inventions of 2004" for the fight against the war on terror.

Correcting a typo from previous comment:

Quoting the linked article:

"Barrett M107 was selected by the Chief of Staff Office of the US Army as one of the "Top Ten Inventions of 2004" for the fight against the war on terror."

"...the fight against the war on terror?" A sniper rifle? I would think a sniper rifle could be used IN the war on terrorism, unless the military has become so reactionary that, in its paranoia, it has declared war on the war on terrorism. Will this get it put on some unnecessary watchlist and monitored by the FBI?

Won't this draw the attention of NSA, CIA and that new favourite of scared (and gullible) taxpayers, Homeland Security? Won't these bodies be then forced to enact countermeasures to neutralise the threat?

Won't the Justice Department then need to violate the rights of everyone involved in an omnibus, COMINTELPRO-style counterespionage operation and arrest itself?

But aren't we forgetting how results-oriented the fight against the war on terror should be, if the war on terror is any indication of how serious we should become when the words "fight," "war," or "against" are invoked?

I certainly hope it is not the result of this article that the M107 is prevents wasting billions of dollars bombing donkeys in Afghanistan. This is counter-productive. America demands numbers in the fights it's declared on the wars it's fighting.

Awesome weapon, all the same. It just needs a war all its own to really showcase its abilities. Maybe if Turkey waffles any more on providing security troops in Iraq...
