Machete!

Man charged with assault after allegedly slashing woman with machete in Bryant Park | New York's PIX11 / WPIX-TV: MANHATTAN —
(June 23, 2015)
A man went on a machete-swinging rampage in Bryant Park Tuesday morning, slashing a woman who had just left a yoga class in the park in a startling burst of violence on the great lawn.
An hour after the random attack, Kyle Newberry described the incident as “just another day in the city.”
Officers received a 911 call of an assault about 11:30 a.m. near 42nd Street and Bryant Park, an NYPD spokeswoman said. When they arrived, they found a 31-year-old woman with a slash would to her right arm. Members of the park’s private security team followed the slasher with folding chairs for protection as members of the NYPD eventually caught up with the suspect at the south entrance off of 40th Street.S

That must have been especially traumatic for a woman who has just left a Yoga class, with the obvious intent to improve her physical health.   One YOB with a Big Knife has just chopped her life style into bloody shreds.

And there wasn't a damn thing she could do about it.  Legally.

In my extended dialogue with a London (England) "Bobby", in 2008, my British friend pointed out that the total ban on firearms has ensured that those citizens who were the victims of random violence didn't die.  Yes, they might have got beaten bloody, sliced and diced, but they didn't die.

What he failed to acknowledge was that Brits are unable to defend themselves against arbitrary attacks by bigger, stronger, better armed and more violence-prone assailants.  (Just as NYC Citizens are similarly made vulnerable,)

London has enacted draconian laws against the possession of Knives.

The maximum penalty for an adult carrying a knife is 4 years in prison and a fine of £5,000.
(THIS will prevent honest British citizens from carrying knives; but it will NOT prevent criminals from carrying knives!)
And still, British Citizens are attacked by knife-wielding assailants.

First  outlaw guns, then knives will be used.

Then outlaw knives.

What weapon will be used next to attack innocents?  Already, Hammers have been used in in New York in gratuitous personal attacks.

And how might law-abiding citizens defend themselves against attacks by Knives and hammers?  Must they learn to carry their own hammers and their own machetes?

The RULE OF PERSONAL DEFENSE is:
"Never bring a knife to a gun fight."

Criminals know that.  They also know that in New York (and London), the odds that they will be opposed by a gun owner are essentially ZERO!

So, they attack their victims with impunity.

Doesn't it seem reasonable that if someone attacks you with a machete or a hammer, your best defense is to use a firearm?  Especially if your attacker is a burly man, and you are a comparatively frail woman?

If you live in New York, perhaps that has just begun to sound more 'reasonable'.

England pompously claims that it is more "civilized" than America, because they don't shoot each other.  They ignore that they carve each other up with relative impunity ... though they don't talk about that.

Is this America's next stop on the "Stop Violence By Saying No To Guns" railroad?

That hasn't worked out all that well for England, has it?

And it isn't working out that well for New York, either.

This is what our modern society wants. There is more concern for the rights of the criminal than there are for the victim.

England believes it is more "civilised" than America because they don't kill each other (excepting their Muslim population, but that's another story). Rape, rob, burgle, assault with hand tools, that's all OK with them, as long as nobody dies.

And if somebody does die, it's not recorded as a "homicide" until and unless the perpetrator is caught, tried, convicted, and all his/her appeals are exhausted, and will count for the stats of that year, not the year the crime actually occurred.

Keeps the "murder rate" down, you see.

Feel safer yet?

Under NYC law, if the lady had a small pocket knife, say 2.5" blade and tried to defend herself. Would she not be charged with carrying a deadly proscribed weapon and possibly assault?
